Avanos Medical (U.S. Avanos Medical feeding tube Food & Drug Administration) has announced that it is recalling Cortrak*2's enteral access system. The recall was announced because of injuries to patients and death from misplaced nasoenteric/nasogastric tubes. The recall covers 629 devices that are currently available in the United States.
Avanos has launched the Cortrak*2 Enteral Access System for its screen-based visualization of the stomach or small bowel, to aid in the correct placement of a medical feeding tube. Patients could suffer damage to their vocal cords, lungs or the trachea, if a tube is incorrectly inserted. Avanos Medical recalls that there have been sixty accidents, 23 deaths, and 23 illnesses that were caused by the incorrect placement or accidental insertion of nasogastric feeding tube while using the CORTRAK*2 Enteral Access System. Avanos Medical feeding tube There have been several injuries, including pneumothorax, respiratory failure, collapsed lung, perforation (a hole through the lungs' wall or the bowel) as well as pleural effusion, which is excess fluid between your lungs and your chest cavity.
Avanos Medical described a plan for users to get updated labeling in order to confirm proper positioning of the nasogastric tubes and nasoenteric pipe prior to use.
The Avanos warning is the second warning that the FDA issued in 2022 regarding the use of enteral feeding tubes. In February, the FDA issued a warning to healthcare professionals as well as parents about the possibility of strangulation when children use feeding tubes.
