Avanos Medical is recalling Cortrak*2 Entry Access System. The FDA states that patients have been injured and killed due to nasogastric or the nasoenteric tube being misplaced. The recall currently covers 629 devices distributed in the United States.
Avanos promotes the Cortrak*2 Ental Access System because of its ability to visualize the stomach of a patient and their small bowel. This permits the installation of a medical feed tube. Avanos Medical If a tube is placed improperly the patient could suffer damage to their vocal cords, lungs, or the trachea. According to Avanos Medical's recall notice, there were 60 injuries and 23 deaths of patients in 2015 due to the misplacement of feeding tubes for nasogastric patients making use of the CORTRAK* 2 Enteral Access System.
