Robert Singer (CEO of WJC) stressed the need to protect the Holocaust and adopt a common definition of antisemitism during an excursion to Moldova.

CHISINAU - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer gathered this week in Moldova with top ministers of the Republic of Moldova and leaders of the local Jewish community to discuss the preservation of Holocaust knowledge and culture, security of Jewish community and ways to fight antisemitism at every level. The WJC delegation also included EuroAsian Jewish Congress President Mikhail Mirilashvili and President of the Moldovan Jewish Community Alexander Bilinkis, along with EuroAsian Jewish Congress Director General Haim Ben Yaakov.
Singer said, "The World Jewish Congress is grateful to the Moldovan Government for its warm reception and its commitment towards preserving the memory Holocaust," The community we have in Moldova is small but dedicated and solid. Singer of the Moldovan Foreign Minister Tudor Ulianovschi spoke on Thursday regarding the criticisms over the adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer also mentioned the need for public condemnation of antisemitism. Minister Ulianovschi in his turn highlighted the dedication of Moldovan officials to building an inclusive society that promotes tolerance, nondiscrimination & respect for all rights of citizens from all ethnicities. Emmanuil Grinshpun Ulianovschi was also grateful to Singer for WJC's positive collaboration with the Republic of Moldova.

The foreign minister also pointed that Chisinau's parliament had adopted a 2016 declaration acknowledging the final report released by the International Commission on Holocaust Studies. The government also adopted the Action Plan on its implementation in January 2017.

On Wednesday, Singer and the WJC delegation met with Moldova's Minister for Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici to discuss the restitution of Jewish property in Moldova, including cemeteries that require renovation as well as the economic benefits of slaughter kosher, as well as the potential of tourist endeavors that could benefit the local Jewish center. Emmanuil Grinshpun The minister announced his intention to advocate for the protection of Jewish cemeteries. He started with 10 sites.

Also Wednesday, Singer and the WJC delegation met with Moldovan Education Minister Monica Babuc to discuss training teachers in Holocaust education and preservation of memories. The discussion included the creation of an Museum of Jewish History, the preservation of Holocaust memorials, and the importance of maintaining properly Jewish cemetery. Singer thanked Minister Babuc to her support in the area of education, Holocaust commemoration and in making sure there is a continuous and productive collaboration with the Jewish community and the Ministry.

Singer, Mirilashvili, as along with Bilinkis Bilinkis, Mirilashvili and Bilinkis met Vlad Plahotniuc (Chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova) for a discussion on the relations between Jewish communities and bilateral ties of Moldova with Israel.

Singer also had a meeting with Rabbis from the Jewish Communities of Moldova. They spoke about important issues related to religious practice, services and Moldova's Jewish daily life, and Singer also addressed the issues of those who live there.

The Jews of Moldova are experiencing a surge in self-consciousness , and a journey back to their origins.
