On visit to Moldova, WJC CEO Robert Singer underlines importance of Holocaust preservation and adopting a universal definition of antisemitism

Chisinau - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met in Moldova this week, along with senior officials from the government as well as leaders of local Jewish communities. They discussed issues such as security of the Jewish Community, the preservation of Holocaust memory as well as education and antisemitism. The following day, Singer discussed with Tudor Ulianovschi the negative aspects of adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definitions for antisemitism. Singer added that it is important to denounce anti-Semitism in a public manner. Minister Ulianovschi expressed his support of Moldovan authorities and emphasized their commitment to building an inclusive society. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer was also praised by Ulianovschi as an example of positive partner with the Republic of Moldova.

Emmanuil Grinshpun The minister of foreign affairs also noted that the Chisinau legislature in 2016 adopted an acceptance declaration of the final report prepared by the International Commission on Holocaust Studies. In January 2017, the Government approved the Action Plan on its execution.

Singer and the WJC's delegation met on Wednesday with Moldova's Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. The conversation was focused on the restitution and preservation of Jewish property in Moldova. This included cemeteries that need to be renovated and economic opportunities related to the kosher meat. Furthermore, the potential of tourism opportunities for the local Jewish Center. Concerning the preservation of Jewish cemeteries in Moldova, the minister expressed his intention to aid in the process, which includes the pilot program that will involve 10 cemeteries.

Singer and the WJC's delegation met on Wednesday with Monica Babuc from Moldova to discuss the training of teachers in Holocaust education and the preservation of the memories. The meeting also discussed the creation of the creation of a Museum of Jewish History for the Republic of Moldova, the preservation and protection of monuments dedicated to Holocaust victims as well as the importance of maintaining Jewish cemeteries in a respectful and proper way. Singer acknowledged Minister Babuc in return for her contribution to education and Holocaust memorialization, as well as for ensuring a productive and continued cooperation with Jewish communities.

Singer, Mirilashvili and Bilinkis were also in conversation with Vlad Plahotniuc from the Democratic Party of Moldova for discussions on relations with the Jewish community as and bilateral relations between the Republic of Moldova and Israel.

During his visit, Singer also met with the rabbis of the Jewish communities in Moldova in a discussion of the most pressing questions relating to religious practice and services offered in the country, while focusing on ways to improve Jewish everyday living in all aspects.

Moldova is home to around 20,000 Jews. The Moldovan Jewish community has come back to life following the destruction caused by the Shoah. There is a broad growth of nation-wide self-awareness and an enlightened returning to their origins through the Jews of Moldova, with Jewish identity and culture being celebrated in a number of forms - such as music, literature as well as theater. The Moldovan Jewish Community is the Moldovan member of the World Jewish Congress.
