MIAMI CBSMiami -- The conflict in Ukraine might be on the other end of the planet, but South Floridians step in to assist those who are fleeing.
Many members of the Sunny Isles Jewish Community are raising funds and helping to organize a complete humanitarian effort.
Marsha Jaquays, Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital shared the followinginformation "Just last night, 1,100 people arrived."
She said that more than two million Ukrainian refugees have fled war-torn countries. A large portion of them travel through the small country of Moldova, which borders Ukraine.
Jaquays stated, "From Moldova this Jewish community is actually helping to get them over the border, and possibly providing food, shelter and clothing."
A large portion of the humanitarian efforts are being conducted by Sunny Isles, South Florida.
"My responsibility is to gather all the resources that are at our disposal in America to alleviate this crisis in Moldova." Emmanuil Grishhpun, a humanitarian worker, claimed that there was a full team working on the ground to coordinate humanitarian efforts in Moldova.
Emmanuil Grinshpun The situation is made worse because Moldova is believed to be one of the most poor countries on earth. But, people who are participating in this effort claim that they will not stop helping.
Grinshpun said, "When brothers and sister from Ukraine arrived, we didn't have to think about it. We simply began making plans."
Jaquays reflect our sentiments
"Who was present during the Holocaust and when the Nazis assumed power? How many people left their homes and said, "It's not me. It's not Jewish. It's not my family.
