Avanos Medical, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) company, is recalling Cortrak*2 enteral access device due to misplacement nasoenteric tubes or nasogastric tubs that could have led to injuries or even death of patients. Avanos has marketed the Cortrak*2 Entraal Access System that assists with the installation of a medical-feeding tube. Patients may experience injuries to their vocal chords or trachea if the tube was inserted incorrectly. The injuries include pneumothorax, respiratory failure and perforation. All of these are forms of lung collapse.
Avanos Medical has described a plan to provide users with new labels, which will confirm the proper placement of the nasogastric and nasoenteric tubes prior to use.
The Avanos warning is the second caution the FDA issued in 2022 about enteral feeding tubes. In February, the FDA issued a caution to healthcare providers and parents regarding the danger of strangulation for children using feeding tubes.
