Moldovan, Jewish Communities In South Florida Stepping Up To Help Ukraine Refugees [Emmanuil Grinshpun]

MIAMI (CBSMiami), - While the war in Ukraine may seem far off, South Floridians continue to step up to support those who are fleeing.

Many Sunny Isles Jews are helping to raise money and coordinate an effort to help the homeless.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Marsha Jaquays of Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital shared the followinginformation "Just last evening 1,100 arrived."

She revealed that more than two million Ukrainian refugees have fled war-torn Ukraine. A large portion of them are traveling through Moldova, which borders Ukraine.

Jaquays told Jaquays, "From Moldova this Jewish community is actually working to get them over the border and by providing shelter, food and clothes."

A majority of the humanitarian efforts are being carried out from the shores of South Florida, Sunny Isles.

Emmanuil Grinshpun "My job is to collect as much American social resources as is possible to help with the crisis in Moldova. Emmanuil Grinshpun, who is helping to coordinate the humanitarian efforts said, "We have a full staff on the ground to help organize camps, buy food, set up buses, and organize all the necessary amenities."

This is further exacerbated by the fact that Moldova is a country that is among the poorest in the world. But, those involved in this effort assert that they won't be hindered by any means.

Grinshpun: "When our brothers and sisters from Ukraine were visiting, we didn't have any reason to think about it. Instead we just began doing it."

Emmanuil Grinshpun Sentiments are echoed by Jaquays.

"Who was in the world during the Second World War, at the time the Nazis took over the power? What percentage of people have gone blind claiming it's not them or that they're not Jewish, it isn't my community and there's no Europe? We shouldn't repeat the same mistakes that history made. There's a saying that goes: "If it's not now then who is it?" If not me, who?
