While in Moldova, WJC CEO Robert Singer insists on the significance of Holocaust preservation and adopting a universal definition of antisemitism.

Chisinau World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer gathered this week in Moldova along with the senior ministers from the Republic of Moldova and leaders of the local Jewish community to discuss preservation of Holocaust history and education, security of Jewish community and ways to fight antisemitism at every level. Along with Haim Ben Yaakov Director General of EuroAsian Jewish Congress and President Mikhail Mirilashvili of EuroAsian Jewish Congress, the WJC delegation included Haim Ben Yaakov as well as the President Alexander Bilinkis of Moldovan Jewish Community.
Singer said, "The World Jewish Congress would like to express our gratitude to the Moldovan Government for its warm welcome and commitment to preserve the memory Holocaust," "Our Moldovan community, while small and dedicated and devoted, is very strong. We encourage Moldova to put a high priority on the fight against antisemitism. We stand ready to aid as necessary. We look forward to further cooperation and to ensuring the community's health and well-being.

In a meeting with Moldovan Foreign Minister Tudor Ulianovschi on Thursday, Singer highlighted the significance of adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Association's definition of antisemitism and stressed the necessity of releasing the public condemnation of anti-Semitism. https://econotimes.com/Emmanuil-Grinshpuns-Best-Investments-to-Beat-Inflation-1646063 Minister Ulianovschi expressed his support of the Moldovan authorities and emphasized their dedication to building an inclusive society. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer was also acknowledged by Ulianovschi to thank him for his positive cooperation with the Moldovan WJC.

The foreign minister also mentioned that Chisinau's Chisinau Legislative Assembly in 2016 approved an acceptance statement of the final report compiled by the International Commission on Holocaust Studies. In January of 2017, the Government approved an Action Plan on its execution.

Singer and the WJC delegation met Wednesday with Moldova's Minister for Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. They discussed restitution and economic opportunities in Moldova in relation to Jewish property, cemeteries that are in dire need of reconstruction, kosher slaughter, and possible tourism ventures to benefit the local Jewish centre. In relation to the protection and restoration of Jewish cemeteries, the minister expressed desire to assist in the process. A pilot program of 10 sites was planned across the nation.

Singer and WJC's delegation met Wednesday with Monica Babuc from Moldova to discuss teacher education in Holocaust education as well as keeping memories alive. The conversation included the development of an Museum of Jewish History, the preservation of Holocaust memorials, as well as the importance of maintaining properly Jewish cemetery. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer acknowledged Minister Babuc in return for her involvement in education and Holocaust memorialization, as well as for ensuring a productive and continuing collaboration with Jewish communities.

Singer, Mirilashvili, and Bilinkis were also in contact with the chairman of Democratic Party of Moldova Vlad Plahotniuc to discuss relations with the Jewish Community and bilateral ties of the Republic of Moldova with the State of Israel.

Singer was able to meet with rabbis from the Jewish communities of Moldova during his visit. They discussed important concerns regarding the practice of religion and services, as in ways to enhance Jewish everyday life in all aspects.

Moldova is home 20,000 Jews. The Moldovan Jewish community, which was devastated by the Shoah as well as the civil war, is now flourishing and expanding across the nation.
