Breakfast Topic: The Things that Keep us Playing WoW

I informed two of my ex-gamers friends a couple of days ago that I was unable to go to the store after my softball game because I needed to be at home to play WoW. In the end, it was our weekly raid night. One of my friends replied, "Why bother? Why even play WoW? I played for a while, but gave up after a while; it all became about numbers." The other nodded his head in agreement, and the other just stood there.



This made me think what is the reason I play WoW? It's not like I don't have other things to do to occupy my time. I have books to read and sports to play and friends and family whom to spend time. My life was fine without WoW. I'm pretty sure that my life would be as good if the Blizzard servers were to crash for a long time (God forbid!), making WoW impossible to play. Why do I even bother playing WoW?



First, I play for the camaraderie. Our guild is like a community I haven't met but still like. I enjoy getting to interact and work towards the same goal with a group of people from all over the country (and even Canada) who I wouldn't typically meet. Second, I started playing Dungeons and Dragons more than 30 years ago, well before most of my guildies had even been born. D&D is in my blood. WoW is very close to re-creating my D&D experience. Thirdly, it's all about the numbers. I love working hard to focus so I can churn out the best DPS I can. When we defeat the new boss I feel a sense of satisfaction.
