A Guide To Selecting The Right Vision For The Job

A well-designed vise is a fundamental tool for precision machining. To make sure that your workpiece remains secure while it is being milled, it is essential to select the correct size vise. There are a three types of vises that you'll encounter in CNC milling: the machinist's vise, the CNC vise and the toolmaker vise.

Machinist Vise

Popular due to its versatility, the machinist vise is a great multi-purpose tool. It has a flanged base, which offers more stability and allows for easier clamping the mc power vise. It's great but it takes up too much space. The best machinist vises come with "lock-down" functions. This means that the jaw won't move until the screw is tightened.

CNC Vise

The CNC vise is a small version of the machinist's view, but still offers all the strength and rigidity of a machine vise. Multiple vises can be utilized in parallel with minimal area due to its smaller footprint. CNC vises are precision ground on multiple sides so that they can be used sideways and in a horizontal. The lack of the Flange makes the process of securing them to the table a bit more difficult, but this can be overcome with the use of special table clamps that are included with the mc power vice. CNC Vises are also lock-down designs.

Toolmaker Vise

The toolmaker vises are small cost, less expensive, and surprisingly precise, however they are more difficult to use, because the method for tightening is an enumeration latch that is multistep instead of the full length screw. Toolmaker vises are well-liked when work needs to be moved from one machine to the next. The work can be put in the toolmaker vise, and you can move it to an additional machine, like to an a mill or drill press. The lock-down mechanism prevents the jaws from lifting. But, vises for toolmakers don't usually have accessories like replaceable jaws or work stops.

Workholding The History of Workholding

The current workholding staples are the result of trial, experimentation and creative thinking. The concept of securing workpieces has been in use for centuries, and early models being depicted in Egyptian tombs. Egyptians would use a robe to wrap around the workpieces and then insert the stick. It was used to secure the piece.

Fortunately that screw technology was developed that led to the genesis of the modern vise in the mid-1700s. Early wooden screw vises were improved by using precision-ground metal designs, and then came the idea of locking down vises to, once again improve their accuracy. MC Power Vise around the workpiece would raise just a little when the screw turned backwards. This was because the screw did not directly apply force to the movable jaw. Lockdown vises are equipped with an internal joint mechanism underneath the jaw, which translated the forward force of the screw into forward and downward forces on the jaw. The jaw is able to stay down and at a square angle to the base even if the workpiece is raised and secured by the tops of the jaws.

The creators and makers of machining are constantly reevaluating workholding. This isn't the final word on vises. However, it's an intriguing look into how your bench vice became a reality.
