Charles Fey invented the slot machine in the 1890's. He likely didn't know that his invention, the "Liberty Bell" became the most well-known form of casino gambling.

The development of slot machines however caused several difficulties as many within the United States viewed gambling as an issue of social stigma. In 1910, the entire legal gambling industry was shut down,which left horse racing as the only legal activity in America.

During the 1920's prohibition era in the 1920s, the desire of the people for gambling was matched by alcohol. There were numerous "Speak Easy's," which were operated by Organized Crime, that had slot machines and alcohol. After prohibition ended casinos operating underground remained.
