Minecraft will Require a microsoft Account to Play By 2022.

Minecraft players can play without a Microsoft account for the past six years that the company has owned the game however, that will change in 2021, the official Minecraft blog announced yesterday. If you have the original game and have not yet switched to an Microsoft account and have not yet logged in, you will no longer be allowed to play.

Since its release in 2011 on consoles the game has been released in two separate versions. Previously, the original Minecraft: Java Edition used Mojang accounts. However, Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, the name for the console and Windows store version of the game, utilized Microsoft accounts. The accounts will remain the same after this change, however crossplay is still not possible. You cannot play with your friends with a different version of Minecraft.

Mojang states that players moving over from Mojang accounts will not lose any data and that the new accounts will offer two-factor authentication (2FA) as well as other security features previously available in the Bedrock Edition of the game such as parental controls and the ability to block invitations and chats which is a concern for younger players playing multiplayer servers.

In the coming months, players will be emailed in batches with instructions on how to transfer. They will also receive a notification on your profile page when you are able to create a new account. Mojang also created a video explaining the move and also to address complaints from players.

Anyone concerned should be aware that the video is reassuring regarding the compatibility between user-generated and content created by users (and multiplayer) However, it makes a lot of assumptions about how positive you'll feel. The video doesn't discuss anything that could bother users usernames for Java Edition may change.

Mojang made it clear in its support documents that the change will not alter your username. However, if someone is using your name as a Gamertag you'll need to accept the addition a suffix at its end (e.g. minecraftfan #1734) or select a new one to log-in with. Names that don't comply with Microsoft's safety standards will need to be changed. Because there are less names available and the addition of a suffix might become more popular, especially given the length of time it took for console players to get these suffixes.

Mojang claims that it was simpler to make use of Microsoft accounts than to design these new features from scratch. If they're so crucial then why did it take so long for them to arrive? The players have requested two-factor authentication for as long as the game has provided the possibility to purchase and sell content - that's three years, if you're counting. It's a great reason to change the system. However, it's not been until this point. This is a Microsoft issue that I find difficult to believe. It simplifies the administration of their biggest game prior to the launch next-generation consoles.

Although not as inflammatory as Facebook's decision to make Facebook accounts to be used for the use of Oculus headsets, Minecraft is still one of the biggest games in the world , and now many players will have to make a decision if they still want to play.

Correction An earlier version stated that usernames should be changed if the same name is used previously as Gamertag. A change to Microsoft's account system in 2013 means that identical names are now given suffixes that distinguish them from one another, and not users being required to change to a different name. MINECRAFT CRAFTING We regret this error.
