'Minecraft Earth' will Shut down On June 30th

Just a little over a decade after launching Minecraft Earth in the US, Microsoft announced this week that it will end the game later in the year. Minecraft Earth players will have until June 30th , 2021 to play the augmented reality title. It's no longer available for download from app marketplaces and it's not available for purchase.



Developer Mojang Studios attributed the shutdown to the coronavirus pandemic and the changes to daily life that it's brought. "Minecraft Earth was created around free movement and collaborative play and collaboration - two things that have become near impossible in the current global situation," the studio said. Mojang as well as Niantic's Pokemon Go, had modified the game to make it more accessible to players at home. Clearly, these changes weren't enough.

- Minecraft (@Minecraft) January 5 2021. If there's a silver lining to this day's news is that Mojang plans to end Minecraft Earth in style. Mojang has released a final update for Minecraft Earth. It contains changes that "make your time on Minecraft Earth more fun." The update also stops real-money transactions and drastically reduces the time it takes to build and craft items within the game. It also allows players to access all the content Mojang had been working on prior to today's announcement. "We believe these changes will allow you to explore, craft and create more - all while staying secure inside," the studio said.



When June 30th arrives and ends, Microsoft will delete player data on July 1st. You'll receive a token if you make purchases in Minecraft Earth during the game's life. This token will allow you to download the Bedrock version of Minecraft to your smartphone. There are more details on the shutdown on the Minecraft website.



It's a disappointing end for Minecraft Earth for Microsoft. The company had high expectations for the game when it was first showcased at WWDC 2019. It's not a good indicator for consumers who will be using AR applications in the near future that Minecraft Earth was unable to beat the virus using all of Microsoft's resources.



Mojang said that they are forever grateful for the amazing talent of the Minecraft community. "This was not an easy choice, and we're doing all we can to ensure you get the most of Minecraft Earth before it sunsets."
