Now in its ground-breaking 16th edition, the London Korean Film Festival celebrates the global success of Korean cinema with a special focus on the extraordinary career of recent Oscar winner Youn Yuh-jung. A serial killer, who's willing to put everything on the line in order to change their fate. This BAFTA-winning film follows the story of an heiress who catches the attention of a con man, who plans to charm her and take her fortune in the process.
The festival opens with the European premiere of Hide and Seek, a debut film from director Huh Jong that was a surprise hit when it opened in South Korea this August, in spite of its lack of high profile stars. It’s a creepy-sounding mystery in which two families begin to suspect, after the unexplained disappearance of one of the fathers, that strangers are living in their house with them. The Opening Gala will be presented by the film’s director and leading man, Son Hyun-joo. Borrowing only sparingly from Charles Perrault‘s fairy tale, Bong Man-dae‘s take on Cinderella is a cautionary paranormal parable about plastic surgery. Closer to a family drama than a straight horror film, Cinderella nonetheless contains some scenes of shudderingly unsettling body horror.
But the spectre of government censorship returned with a vengeance from the mid-1960s until the 1980s, leaving South Korean cinema in the wilderness as American movies began to encroach on the domestic market. The ‘love nest’ took a team of eight several days to construct, though it appears on screen for seconds, and neither Pierce Brosnan nor Halle Berry appeared at the location. This Thursday, the London Korean Film Festival returns for its eighth year, highlighting the latest in Korean cinema and a full slate of retrospectives over its two week duration. While Korean culture is unlikely to experience quite the boom it did in 2012 when, between the explosion of Gangnam Style and Kim Ki-duk’s win at the Venice Film Festival it was pretty much inescapable, its draw to foreign audiences is undeniable. People board the fast train from Seoul to Busan, unaware that a virus is spreading through the carriages, slaughtering those onboard.
The film focuses on the downward spiral and continuous cycle of vengeance as Kim succumbs to an attractive and transformative power beyond good and evil. It is here in the dark abyss where good men — through a lapse of judgement — turn into hollow monsters of themselves not so far removed from the ones they have sought to destroy. Take the high-school equivalents of Shin Su-won’s Pluto and the brutal animated film The King of Pigs from Train to Busan director, Yeon Sang-ho — two films that feel like they are all part of the same dark and twisted reality. Both Lee Byung-hun and Choi Min-sik deliver remarkable performances and despite it’s grim and explicit nature, you remain drawn in and unable to switch off.
If you're looking for some new films to get your teeth into, then Netflix has a whole bunch of options out there across a range of different genres. And if you've been loving some of the K-dramas that Netflix currently has to offer , then you'll love all the different K-movies available to watch too. The movie, a biting satire taking a skewered look at societal inequality in Seoul, took the viewer into totally unexpected territory, making for one of the most unique cinema experiences of recent times.
