Minetest, the Minecraft-like voxel game engine (and an easy game that is included) has a big new version out with Minetest 5.4.0 and is worth a second go.
As we have already stated during the release Candidate stage of the release, this release makes it much easier to momod small mod packs as well as entire games. Minetest was previously a way for players to browse and download mods directly from the game. However, it now also downloads all dependencies mods need making it simpler to find what you require and load it into a game. It's no required to download just one mod and then search for the components it requires.
A few improvements were also made to the built-in game "Minetest Game". Servers While it's not the most advanced but it is a great tool to showcase the engine and to add mods. With Minetest 5.4.0 it now has crafting guides, five more wood variations, sound effects for lava and active furnaces, new translations and numerous bugs fixed. So it continues the gradual and steady progress into something a bit bigger out of the box.
Other new features include the cross-hair changing as you point at objects, the ability to bind mouse buttons, name tags for players now have a semi-transparent background, there's a caverns feature for the flat map generation The place and 'fig' keys are now configurable, lots of modding enhancements and a plethora of bug fixes overall like stopping players being able to access inventories of other players.
Pictured - Minetest 5.4.0 with a few tweaks.
It's wonderful to see this open-source game engine and game succeeding. According to the official server list, Minetest is used by many people with hundreds on the internet at the moment this article is published.
Full changelog can be found here. More details are available on the Minetest website.
