There are two versions of Minecraft. They can be purchased separately and are not interchangeable. Deciding which one is best for you can be a daunting experience however we'll do our best to make it simple for you.
The Java Edition is the original Minecraft version that is purchased on the Minecraft website. The Bedrock Edition is the Minecraft version that can be downloaded on consoles, mobile devices and also through the Microsoft Store.
If you play Minecraft with friends, you need to get the same version as they do, so make sure you check with them before purchasing.
If you're the first person in your clan to join the game, or if you are planning to play on your own Minecraft Here are a few things to remember before you decide which one to choose.
The Bedrock Edition restricts modding
While the Bedrock Edition does have add-ons but it has more premium content to be added to the game. However, the Java version allows you to install mods (such as texture packs) for free.
If you're planning on modding the hell out of your game and don't want to be limited by Microsoft-approved mods, then you'll need to choose the Java Edition.
Bedrock is a better choice when you are looking to play across multiple platforms
The Bedrock Edition allows for cross-platform multiplayer on mobile devices, consoles, and Windows 10. The Java Edition is exclusively for PC, and it can only let you play with other Java players, which is a lot more restrictive.
Keep in mind that if you're looking to purchase the Bedrock Edition on different platforms you'll have to buy it for each console. That said purchasing add-ons (like texture packs) are transferable from other platforms.

Hardcore, Spectator and Spectator modes only available in the Java Edition
Both Hardcore mode (which means you can't revive after death) as and Spectator mode, which allows you to fly around and see the world, are available only in the Java Edition.
Java or Bedrock?
The Bedrock Edition of Minecraft is recommended for casual players. It is more user-friendly and more stable than the Java Edition. It also allows you to play with other platforms, which is a real plus.
Java Edition is a better option if you're an avid Minecraft player and want to tweak the game's core features, or experience new features in development before the majority of players.
