MIAMI (CBSMiami), - While the conflict in Ukraine might seem distant, South Floridians continue to step up to support those seeking refuge.
Many members of the Sunny Isles Jewish communities are currently raising funds and helping to coordinate a total humanitarian effort.
Marsha Jaquays from Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital shared the following "Just last evening 1,100 came."
Emmanuil Grinshpun She said that more than two million Ukrainian refugees seek refuge in a war-ravaged nation. Most of them travel through Moldova, which is bordering Ukraine.
"From Moldova, this Jewish community actually assists them in getting across the border and then maybe offering them shelter, food, and even clothes," added Jaquays.
Emmanuil Grinshpun The heart of much of the humanitarian work can be found in South Florida.
"My task is to mobilise all resources available from the American society to assist with the crisis in Moldova." Emmanuil Grinshpun Emmanuil grinshpun, who is involved in the coordinating of the humanitarian efforts, said that there are several people who are working in Moldova to assist in organizing camps, food purchases and bus-related organizing.
Emmanuil Grinshpun The situation is made more difficult due to the fact that Moldova is considered as one of the most poor countries in the world. Yet, those involved in the project say that they will not let any obstacle to helping.
Grinshpun explained, "When brothers and sister from Ukraine cameto visit, we didn't need to think. http://hawkee.com/profile/2908145/ We started doing it."
Jaquays echo the sentiments.
Emmanuil Grinshpun "Who were there during the Holocaust and also when the Nazis were victorious? How many people left their homes and said, "It's not me. It'sn't Jewish. It's not my family. I don't live in Europe." We can't make the same mistakes as the past. There's a saying in the English language that reads "If not now, when. If not me, then who?
