Minecraft Player Spends two Years Building a Virtual City

Minecraft player works for two years building a virtual city by Zoe Kleinman Technology reporter, BBC News

17 October 2014

A Delaware student spent two years creating an imaginary world he named Titan City in Minecraft.

Titan City is built out of 4.5 million Minecraft building blocks and includes 96 buildings.

Duncan Parcells says it has taken him two years to build, averaging up to five hours a week working on the project.

The first building he built was a virtual version of the World Trade Center, which took 18 months to perfect.

The 19-year-old believes Titan City is not a realistic New York model.

"It's inspired by New York," he told the BBC.

"A majority of people believe that it's a pastime, but it's not."

He initially built the city with the Xbox 360 version, but he has since switched it to the PC version, which he claims offers more construction possibilities.

Mr. Parcells plans to build an airport and a sports arena.

"I think it's a way to provide a outlet for energy and architecture," he said.

"Architecture has always been something that I have enjoyed. I am most proud of Victorian-style buildings that are less modern and more art deco.

"A lot of people drop by and want to stroll around and explore or help in the construction. A lot of them help with the construction of roads."

While Titan City has received a warm reception online, Mr Parcells said that until now he has kept his virtual world apart from his everyday life.

"I've kept it a secret, it's kind of like a second life I don't talk about but people are starting to look into it," he said.

"My parents think it's cool. I'm sure they're content that I don't play it often."

Microsoft recently announced that it would purchase Minecraft studio Mojang in a deal worth $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

The game logged its 100 millionth player in February 2014, its creator Markus Persson, aka Notch, announced on Twitter.

After you have made your initial purchase, Minecraft is free to download and play. However you can purchase in-game items.

The game is played in a virtual environment that's made up of cubes of various materials. The majority of these materials can be used to create blocks, and some can be transformed into usable raw materials like iron, wood, and diamond.

The game demands you to survive by building shelters using blocks and turn raw materials and their combinations into useful items (swords and bows, armor, etc.) to defeat the many monsters in the game.
