Craftbukkit is a third-party Minecraft mod that allows users to utilize Minecraft plugins. The mod is available at Bukkit.org and operates as a JAR file which runs the Minecraft server JAR.
After downloading the latest version of Craftbukkit rename the downloaded file to craftbukkit.jar. You can download the development version or the recommended build. Although recommended builds are more stable, they often use older versions of Minecraft that users can't connect to with their current clients. Unless the recommended build is also updated to the most recent version of Minecraft you'll need to use the development build.
Copy the craftbukkit.jar file to the same directory that contains your minecraft_server.jar. This article assumes you already have a functioning Minecraft Server. If not, check out my article on creating your own Minecraft Server.
You can start your Minecraft server in the same way you would normally, but replace minecraft_server.jar by craftbukkit.jar. Craftbukkit, which requires more memory, may require you to increase the amount of RAM available to your server. Craftbukkit creates an configuration file named bukkit.yml when it begins. This file is not required to be altered and is a very basic.
What's next with Bukkit is deciding and installing plugins. The plugins.bukkit.org section of the Bukkit.org website lists all available plugins. You can search for plugins by keywords or sort them by category. Plugins which haven't been updated recently likely won't work with the latest version of Craftbukkit/Minecraft. On a plugin page you can download the plugin, find details and documentation, and interact with other users.

Installing and downloading a plug-in is fairly easy. Craftbukkit will automatically generate a JAR file. This change will take effect only after the server has been restarted. The plugin will also create an additional folder with the same name as the JAR file containing configuration files as well as other assets needed to use the plugin.
If your download is a zip or rar file you must unzip/unrar this file using a program which can handle these extensions. These files should be moved to the plugin folder. Make sure that the JAR file is located in the root folder of the plugins folder. Restart your server and the new plugin will be activated.
