Minecraft Owner Bans In-game NFTs to Discourage Profiteering

Minecraft developer Mojang Studios is taking a firm stance against NFTs. In a blog entry titled "Minecraft and NFTs," the studio which is owned by Microsoft wrote that "integrations of NFTs with Minecraft are not something we will support or allow."

Mojang has stated that blockchain technology isn't allowed to be integrated into our client and server applications. "To ensure that Minecraft users have a safe and inclusive experience, we do not allow can Minecraft in-game content like worlds, skins or persona items be utilized by blockchain technology to create a unique digital asset."

Mojang claims that a few companies have created "NFT Implementations that go along with Minecraft World Files and Skin Packs." This suggests that Minecraft players could earn NFTs from playing on servers or through earning them outside of Minecraft.

Mojang claims that these practices promote digital scarcity and exclusion, which goes against the ideals of Minecraft. The studio stated that NFTs "are not inclusive of all our communities and create a situation where the haves and have-nots." Mojang says that NFTs their speculative nature "encourages profiteering."

I strongly suggest that you read the blog post in its entirety because it concisely spells out a variety of critiques of NFTs and blockchain-related projects in a language that is easy to comprehend. (There are many more quotes that I could add to the list.

Valve has taken also taken an aggressive stance against blockchain games and NFTs on Steam, and much of the gaming community has opposed NFTs and NFTs, including Ubisoft discontinuing the production of NFTs for Ghost Recon Breakpoint just a few months after having launched the initiative. Epic Games stated last year that it is "open" to blockchain-based games on Epic Games Store. The store received the first blockchain-based game in June.

Mojang does not completely rule out the possibility of incorporating blockchain technology in the near future. However, it states that "we do not plan to integrate blockchain technology into Minecraft right at this time."
