Minecraft-makers Cancel Film Inspired By Game

Minecraft-makers cancel film inspired by game

Minecraft-maker Mojang has intervened to stop the creation of a film set in the game's brick-built world.

The makers of Birth of a Man had launched an appeal on Kickstarter for $600,000 (PS366,000) to help finance the production of the film.

It was pulled by its creator only a few days after it was launched.

Mojang founder Markuss Persson later posted a message on Twitter to explain why it was shut down.

"We don't allow [half-a-million-dollar Kickstarter projects] based on our [intellectual property] without any deals in place," wrote Mr Persson, also known as Notch, in a tweet.

The message is believed to be referring to the fact that there was no licensing deal arranged between Mojang and the film-makers to use blocks, items and other elements identical to those seen in the game. The film was scheduled to be released on YouTube in 2014

A teaser video was posted on the Kickstarter project page. It showcased concept footage that combines live action with creatures, landscapes, and weapons.

In the short film the director Brandon Laatsch said he had been developing the idea for a Minecraft film for more than a year.

He added that he and the other gamers who were part of the project hoped the final film would be more effective than films based on well-known video games.

In the teaser clip, he stated that Minecraft was the perfect video game for adapting to a movie.

"The reason it doesn't have characters, it doesn’t have stories, which I consider an enormous benefit, since we can make our own story."

Mr. Laatsch has not yet made a statement on the reasons for the project's cancellation , or whether it will be revived when Mojang has reached an agreement to license its intellectual property.
