"Its ‘eaten’ holes and collage artwork were innovative for its time The book includes counting, days of the week, food, and a butterfly’s life cycle, which contribute to juvenile education. Carle’s original work has been the basis for various tie-in products. The primary audience for this product would be the age between 4-7. This is because the characteristics of the book is very simple. The layout and structure of the book is in a easy layout because it allows them to read it more easily. The colours used are fun and vibrant because this is what successfully allows them to consume the product. The book is aimed at both boys and girls because it is not stereotypical. The purpose of it is to inform because it is showing how caterpillars develop into butterflies and shows how unique the process is.​
