Students Encouraged to Dream at Young Leaders Day

Experience a 3D-lifestyle. This is the goal that inspiring New Zealand leaders set for the more than 2,000 students attending the National Young Leaders Day (NYLD) which was held at the Vodafone Events Centre, Manukau earlier in the day.

Students had the opportunity to hear from Laura Langman, a Silver Fern and Northern Mystics player, and Cam Calkoen, an athlete and founder of the Carabiner Mentoring Programme, as and Jamie Fitzgerald, chief executive at The Mind Lab Frances Valintine and Charlie Laumatia, presenter of Attitude Programmes for Schools.

NYLD events this year challenge students to live a life in 3D by dreaming, daring , and building their leadership capabilities.

"Just as a 3D movie that explodes off the screen, an 3D life is so much better than a dull flat one," NYLD manager Annette Fale says.

"Imagine what your life could be like. Then , go after that dream. Be brave and do the adventurous things that make life an adventure. Develop your strengths - there is more to you waiting to be discovered. Students were taught that determination, vision and determination are the key to a successful life.

Frances Valintine was the driving driver behind Media Design School. She founded The Mind Lab in Newmarket in 2013. It is a place that teaches robotics as well as electronics programming, filmmaking, and science technology to kids aged 4-15 years.

Frances challenged the leaders of tomorrow to prepare for an ever-changing future.

"To prepare for the future, you have to open your mind to be curious. It is your strongest asset not technology, and not the way you play Minecraft, but curiosity and discovery," Frances said, as the students wrote notes in their notebooks.

"Wake up every morning and think about ways that I can make things better.

The day was both inspiring and fun. Highlights of the day included performances by the Laughing Samoans, interactive gaming and 3D video clips.

Over 90,000 students from New Zealand have attended a National Young Leaders Day since 2001. Every year, events are held in Auckland, Wellington and Palmerston North, Rotorua. Christchurch and Dunedin.
