The 8-bit Processor Built into Minecraft can Run its Own Games

Computer chips have become so small and complex that it's sometimes hard to recall the real physical laws behind them. They're not just a collection of ever-increasing numbers. For a practical (well, virtual) example, check out the most recent version of a computer processor that is built exclusively inside the Minecraft game engine.

Minecraft builder "Sammyuri" spent seven months building what they call the Chungus 2, an enormously complex computer processor that lives virtually inside the Minecraft game engine. This isn't even the first time a computer processor has been virtually rebuilt inside Minecraft however the Chungus 2 (Computation Humongous Unconventional Number and Graphics Unit) might very well be the largest and most complex, based on an 8-bit processor that has a one hertz clock speed and an adabyte of RAM.

Minecraft processors utilize the physics engine of the game to recreate the architecture of real processors on a large scale, with materials including redstone dust, torches repeaters, pistons, levers and other machines. To provide a sense of scale, each block in Minecraft is a virtual meter across. This means that it's about the same size as a cruise ship or skyscraper if this build were to be recreated in the real world.

When connected to an in-game 32x32 "screen" and "controller" (manipulated by an avatar of a Minecraft avatar player jumping around on block-sized buttons) Chungus 2 Chungus 2 can play interchangeable 2D games such as Tetris, Snake, or even a graphing calculator. Certain programs require the Minecraft server to be artificially speeded up in order to make the processor fast enough to use. Mpservers Every program is developed entirely in Minecraft and connects to the computer as an arcade game cartridge that is the size of the freight train.

The project is an amazing application of computer science in action, created in the way that makes its concepts tangible and visual. The video showcasing the Chungus 2 is impressive enough. If you'd like to experience it in action, you can download it and run it on your server at mc.openredstone.org. If we wait several years, we might just acquire a Minecraft CPU that's powerful enough to run Minecraft and at that the universe could implode.
