Minecraft Vs. Roblox: how these Games Compare for Kids

Minecraft and Roblox are incredibly popular sandbox-style games. Both allow you to design games, play with other players and of course play for hours. They also have both active online communities that are always ready to help. However, Roblox and Minecraft are very different when it comes to the details. Here's how they compare in five essential elements.
YUROCK

THE CONTENDERS

Minecraft. It is recommended for players aged 8+. Open-ended, exploratory and creation-focused environment where players can design objects and structures from scratch with materials from around the world.

Roblox. The best for those aged 13and over. This website for game creation allows users to create and upload their own games, as well as play games in a multi-player environment.

Price

Minecraft has a more expensive initial cost ($26.95 for PC and Mac) however, Roblox uses the "freemium/premium" model.

Roblox allows you to play games and design some games for free, but you have to sign up to access the really fun stuff like customizing your avatar, buy and trade weapons, as well as create additional games. You can buy Roblox's in-game currency, Robux, at a cost, but it's worth signing up for the basic membership ($5.95 per month for Builders Club) that eliminates advertisements, lets you play more games, and also buys daily Robux.

Ease of Use

Both games are challenging , but they're also part of the game's unique excitement. Minecraft has three difficulty levels, but there are no instructions. It is a game that you play through exploration, experimentation and watching YouTube videos and reading other fan-made content (there's lots of it online).

Roblox provides two modes of play of play: creating and playing. Although it offers lots of variety, it can also be frustrating as the games are created by users. Roblox offers a wealth of information, a wiki , and an active community for children interested in making their own games.

Social Aspects

This is the largest wild card. Both games allow multiplayer play, however Minecraft is more suited to solo play. Roblox, on the other hand, is social immediately after signing up -- friending and chatting are huge parts of Roblox. (Review our social media guidelines for elementary school-age kids.) Roblox and Minecraft both feature a large amount of user-generated content. Players of all ages, including teens, participate and play in the game. When you play with any content created by users your child may be exposed to strong language, sexually suggestive imagery and even violence. Controlling some of this can be accomplished through each game's built-in controls -Roblox for instance. Roblox lets you shut off chatting, block people and report inappropriate behavior, whereas Minecraft doesn't limit what you say but lets you "ignore" other gamers.

Safety

Both games have had incidences of inappropriate predatory behavior during multiplayer and chat mode. Roblox has stepped up its child safety program to include parental controls, human moderators and other features to catch offenders. You can play Minecraft on your own or with a limited number of friends. Contact with strangers is therefore strictly restricted. If your child wants to play on a server that's open to the public, ensure it's kid-friendly.

Kid-Friendliness

Roblox and Minecraft have large followings on the internet. This means that children have access to a variety of content, including YouTube videos or wikis, as well as Reddit forums, which can expose them to more mature topics when they search for information about the games. Additionally, Roblox lets users embed advertisements in their games, meaning that kids will encounter in-game marketing. Violence can be an issue in both games, but while Roblox's user-uploaded games tend to be more of the shooter/explosion/disaster variety, Minecraft's leans more toward hand-to-hand combat, even though it's depicted in a cartoonish way.

Creativity and Learning

Yes! Both games can teach basics of computer programming (Minecraft uses an adaptation of Minecraft to Java and Roblox runs the Lua programming language) However, Minecraft is the superior game in the sense of being educationally friendly. Both games promote math skills that promote thinking, reasoning, problem-solving, and collaboration. Both games are appearing in after-school classes, computer camps, and even teachers lessons because the abilities you gain by creating digital content as well as interacting with others online are essential skills for the 21st century.
