There will be an Appeals Process

The new system lets players communicate chat messages in multiplayer games, but the community is concerned about the implications.

Mojang's community manager has stated that the company will not alter its controversial player reporting feature and demanded the end of harassment of Mojang employees.

Posting on Reddit, MojangMeesh clarified that although the company is committed to feedback from its players, it doesn't necessarily "change the design principles Mojang Studios adheres to-this includes the upcoming reporting system". They also requested that angry players to stop "following Mojang employees around here on Reddit" to make them feel harassed in threads that aren't related to their work. The post has received more than 2000 downvotes at the time of writing.

Minecraft players have been furious over the new player reporting system since it was announced a month ago, but it was finally implemented in yesterday's 1.19.1 update. It allows players on both private and Mojang-hosted servers to flag inappropriate messages in chat to be reviewed by Mojang investigators, which could result in suspensions and bans for players who violate Minecraft's guidelines for community members, even on servers hosted by a third party. Some players are concerned that the system could result in bans for players who have posted messages that were taken out of context and, more generally, that it gives Microsoft too much power to dictate the content on its platform.

While some players may be acting out in a negative way about it, I don't think their argument is unfounded. It's hard to see the world in which the system doesn't ban anyone because a joke between friends was misinterpreted. There is an appeals procedure, though, and it's also true that there are plenty of misconceptions floating around about how the system works. Read any thread about the subject and it won't take long before you see someone complaining about having their private server's chat being'monitored' by Microsoft or worried that they'll be banned for cursing. Neither of these are possible according to Mojang's FAQ regarding the reporting system.

Mojang is in a bit of a jam with this one. A thread from Stuart Duncan-who is the administrator of a Minecraft server for children with autism-shows how much awful stuff Minecraft plays host to on a regular basis. Duncan showcases studies and reports from the ADL as well as the BBC, and others that tell stories of racists and predators using Minecraft in a way that is abominable. The provision of tools to combat that behavior is important. While it's true that 'think of the children" scare stories are used to justify reactionary policies in real life, a tool that lets players report chat messages that aren't legitimate in Minecraft isn't the tip of a draconian wedge.

When you say "no one ever asked" for this, "the entire community hates this" or "no-one wants this" Please stop trying to be a spokesperson for everyone. "If you are concerned about the exploitation of others, that's great. Me too. It's not perfect but real people can be saved by it. July 27, 2022

In other Minecraft news, Mojang recently announced that the game won't include NFTs because they are incompatible with the "values of inclusion in the creative process". At least that move only seemed to garner enthusiastic support from the playerbase, although there's been no information yet about what the AI they've trained to play Minecraft thinks about it.

One of Josh's earliest memories is of playing Quake 2 on the family computer at a time when he was too young for this, and he's been irreparably game-brained ever since. Since since then, his writing has been featured in Vice, Fanbyte, and the Financial Times. He can play almost every game, and has written about everything, from visual novels to Assassin's Creed. His biggest passions are CRPGs and immersive games. He believes you're too harsh about Deus Ex.
