Gamers tuned in early. The percentage of music streamed via gaming consoles between 6am and 9am increased 47% compared to last year. Their favorite genre? The number of streams on Spotify for Travis Scott, who has agreements with McDonalds, PlayStation and Fortnite in the past, increased dramatically after he played in a virtual concert within Fortnite. The streaming platform said that streaming increased 207% worldwide between April 26 and April 30 compared to the same time last year.
People actually sought out video game music. The most played soundtracks to video games this year were from "Minecraft," the original "Doom" and "Death Stranding."
2020 was also a significant year for virtual artists, people who are represented by fictional characters like the band Gorillaz. The streaming of Hatsune Miku, a Japanese virtual singer increased by 136% in 2018.
In 2018, Riot Games, which creates the game "League of Legends," invented a virtual pop star group called K/DA. The name refers to the standard League of Legends lingo: the kills, deaths and assists players rack up in each game and that are recorded on the scoreboard. This year, Riot brought the group, voiced by real-life singers and back with a brand new album, whose songs topped Billboard charts. Spotify has seen its stream growth increase by 109 percent.
Riot announced that its development of K/DA has allowed it to expand its reach beyond League gamers and has helped get more people interested in the game's content it said to CNN Business in a statement.
Cook stated that gaming and music go hand-in-hand as gamers often listen while they play.
Spotify is continuing to look into partnerships with gaming corporations. Most recently, Spotify partnered with League of Legends and continues to collaborate with Microsoft and Sony on the Xbox and PlayStation platforms.
Cook said that Spotify has increased its gaming console streaming streams. It also added playlists that are curated. "Thinking through how and what people would like to listen to while they are playing," Cook said.
