Minecraft XBLA made Money within an Hour, Broke Digital Sale Records

Minecraft is digging its own grave with its latest release on XBLA -- and by "grave" we mean "lavish gold-plated throne rooms with indoor pool and grape-feeding robots." Today's tweet by Markus "Notch", Markus Persson, a Minecraft developer, revealed that Minecraft became profitable within one hour of its launch through XBLA. That's on top of Notch's multi-million-dollar PC version.



Notch reported that Minecraft sold more than 400,000 copies in 24 hours, based on the number of people who participated in leaderboards. According to Microsoft, Minecraft sold more digital copies than any other XBLA title within its first day of launch, breaking digital sales records.



In the early hours of today, Notch tweeted that he had sales figures for Minecraft (turns out they were the above leaderboard figures) This sparked an exchange of thoughts about the inner workings of XBLA developer contracts with Fez's Polytron. Polytron hasn't been able to determine Fez's exact figures even though it came out in the last month.



"Standard procedure" according to Polytron is "you know how much you've sold when you receive your first check three to four months later." Notch believed that receiving immediate numbers was the standard however he stayed clear of contract negotiations and isn't aware of the details.



Minecraft also gets free updates, "which is something every other developer on the platform is told is not an option," Polytron wrote. Notch responded: "We had fought for this, but we only got only a handful of them. I'm not sure why they don't want it."



We might have discovered the secret talent of Notch and the secret to his success: fighting a contract, avoiding negotiation and winning.

Microsoft today announced that Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition the console version of the extremely loved PC game created by Mojang, has broken all previous records for digital sales selling more than any other game in the first 24 hours on Xbox LIVE Arcade.



This follows on from Trials Evolution, which similarly exceeded revenue sales figures on its first day of sales as the first game of the "Arcade Next" program.



Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition was developed by 4J Studios in conjunction with Mojang and Microsoft Studios, and introduces new gameplay experiences such as a unique crafting menu, game tutorials and split-screen multiplayer, as well as online multiplayer that can accommodate up to eight players via Xbox LIVE.



Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition is available on Xbox LIVE Arcade for 1600 Microsoft Points, and is the final game of the "Microsoft Studios Presents: Arcade NEXT" lineup that also includes Trials Evolution (Redlynx), Bloodforge (Climax) and Fable Heroes (Lionhead).
