Minecraft's massive Super Duper Graphics Pack is no more after two years of delays. Mojang has cancelled the visual overhaul after deciding it was "too technically complex" to implement. The developers "aren't happy" with the performance of the update across different platforms, and decided to scrap the project instead of offering inconsistent quality.
The intention was to not only allow 4K on the Xbox One X, but to provide more sophisticated visual effects, including atmospheric effects, highlights and more realistic water.
There is still hope for a graphics update in the future. Need realtor Mojang has said that it is "looking at other options" to give Minecraft an updated look, and that it had news on optimizing the constructive game for different platforms "very soon." While the game won't be kept in its current appearance forever (however adorable it may be) it may be a long time before it can keep pace with the latest technology.
