Minecraft Graphics to Be More 'realistic'

After rescinding an extended graphics update for Minecraft, Microsoft has unveiled an additional update for the game's visuals.



This update improves how light bounces around Minecraft scenes, making them appear more "realistic".



The graphics patch will only be available to RTX Nvidia users.



Microsoft announced that it will be available in 2020, but they did not provide a specific date.

The RTX graphics cards use a technique known as "ray tracing" to do a better job of working out how light bounces around the virtual scenes in games.



It can make the visuals on screen appear more realistic, as shadows as well as the lighting effects in game environments will look more realistic.



"Ray tracer is at heart of what we believe will come next for Minecraft," stated Saxs Persson (creative director of Minecraft at Microsoft), in a statement.



"In normal Minecraft, a block of gold just appears yellow however, with ray tracing enabled, you can see the specular highlight. You can see the reflection, and you might even see a mob reflecting in it," he said.



Writing on the Rock Paper Shotgun game news website, Katharine Castle said the update was "impressive in action".



She added: "I do have concerns over how easy Minecraft's RTX update will run."



Ms. Castle stated that it will require an "hefty" RTX to run all the various lighting effects, shadows, and atmospheric effects simultaneously.

Prices for Nvidia cards differ widely among the online retailers. Cards with low-end specs typically cost more than PS300. The most expensive cards in the range could cost thousands of dollars. The update will also only be available on Windows 10.



As the update is being developed, Minecraft maker Mojang has said that it will be available as an option on the settings screen, so players could test it out.



It also said that it was working on a broad overhaul of Minecraft's graphics engine. This could provide some visual improvements for players who don't have an RTX card or can't run the game on a PC.



"Not all devices will support ray tracing, but we will see some graphics enhancements on most devices," said Mojang. No timeframe has been set for when this general update will be released.
