Is it Really Necessary to have Everything?

Media

I've already discussed the way that pictures can take up a lot of space, but when they serve a purpose in relation to the main content of the page, and do not occupy excessive amounts of data, they are excuseable. However, what isn't often excused in web pages that contain text are videos. I am irritated when I click on an interesting headline on a news site and am then redirected to a breif article acompained with a two-minute clip of their morning show. I'm not likely to even watch the video, so why must be consuming my bandwidth? However, an argument could be made for this kind of scenario however there is no argument that pages contain some type of video playing for no reason.

I'm sure we've all visited websites that featured an enormous high definition spinning globe or something at the top of it, we probably even glanced at it for a second and something in our brain might have thought, "Hey, that's cool," but a second later, we scroll down to read whatever we were looking for. We did not go to the site to gaze at the background, we came there to read the actual content that the site has to offer. Why should the background of a website consume more data than the stuff we visited the site to look at. If the website was constructed in a way that is not perfect, then there is a possibility that the background is causing your browser to perpetually re-download the same video clip repeatedly. Ceglowski suggested that if a website looks good with pictures of President William Howard Taft rather than any other images or videos designers would want there then they should just include images of Taft instead.

Tablet Accessibility

I'm not a fan of tablets, I don't have them in the same way that other people and therefore I'm not planning to spend long talking about them, however tablets are great for some people. minecraft servers list When iPads came out, web pages started to evolve initially simple and unimportant buttons were expanded and styled and, of course, the fanciest ones are the ones that you are least likely to press. It's an unfortunate that I don't have a degree in web design because designing websites that function on any kind of hardware is hard work.

To date, I've only talked about things that lie wihin the developer's controll however, once a page lets ads on it there's no way for a developer to determine if the page they just spent hours designing and optimizing looks good and perform well. A fairly standard 3MB page could be loaded with an obsene 50 MB advertizing.

Ceglowski presented this graph, which is based on the 2015 US cost per bybyte of internet bandwidth. It shows how much it costs to display advertisements on various websites in comparison to the actual content. It is clear that ads not only cost us our time and protect us from computer viruses, but also the mere act of showing ads costs us money in the form of internet bandwidth. (There's another good argument for using an ad blocker) (Of course, this kind of graph is only applicable to primaily text based sites and if this graph included YouTube the entry would have been able to boast a more reasonable ad to content ratio)

I could go on for days complaining about ads, but I'm sure we all could so I will not bore you with it more.

Two paths

After his presentation, Ceglowski presented two game video screenshots.

Minecraft is a fairly basic game, it isn't an extremely beautiful game, but it's an endlessly creative platform.

Call of Duty is continuously being developed to offer the best graphics and compelling gameplay. However, they require more resources to run, and don't really stand out from other games of the genre.

We want the internet to look more like Minecraft. We want to see innovative and unique things being done with lesseffort, instead of the same type of things we are already used to done with more.

What should I do?

While I know that this won't make a big difference on the future internet and neither will anyone else. We will continue to be forced to use bloated websites, but we must also look at ways to reduce clutter in other areas of our lives. Is a built-in backup camera worth an extra $500 for a brand new car? No, you're safer atually turning around to back up. Is it worth paying $1.25 more to get a scoop of guacamole in your burrito? You could get a whole avacado for less than that. Are you spending enough time watching TV? You could be doing more productive activities in your life.
