If 120 frames-per second on your gaming laptop's display is twice as quick as 60 frames per second, then surely eight-times as many frames is eight-times as good. This is the reasoning behind the brand new super high refresh rate panels on Alienware gaming laptops. The Dell subsidiary is now selling its M17 R5 and x17R2 17-inch laptops sporting new panels, claimed to be the most efficient in the market.
The panels are only able to display 1080p resolution with that amazing refresh rate, but it's likely to be the best. You'll have to be running an application that can produce nearly 500 frames per second in order to see the benefit - turn off ray-tracing and go with Minecraft-grade textures, I suppose. The new panel has an average response time of 3ms and it's compatible with both AMD FreeSync and NVIDIA G-Sync depending on the GPU configuration. The upgrade is $300 more than the standard screen at 165Hz, which is 95 cents per hertz.
I've seen demonstrations of 120hz screens versus 240hz at trade shows and they were enough to convince me that at a minimum some ultra-fast gamers can benefit from them. But what if you increase the speed? I'm not sure if it will improve actual gaming performance - I'm sure it won't be able to double it, even for amazing eSports pros who have Special Eyes. Gaming equipment is famous for its extravagant overkill.
