Coronavirus: Leicester church uses Minecraft to teach Bible to teenagers
17 May 2020
A church has resorted to Minecraft to teach children about Christianity during the lockdown.
The server was used to recreate Leicester's St John the Baptist Church so that the youth club can use the space for Bible lessons.
Josh Young, the organiser said it was a method of meeting young people "where they are" and engaging them in a context they are used to.
Virtual reality means that they have also been able creative with lessons.
Mr. Young, for example, created an underwater whale to educate them about Jonah's story. He also challenged the kids to build boats in order to learn more about Jesus who calmed an incoming storm.
The 27-year old youth worker added, "Having a community of young people is very important and that's what I wanted to keep in the lockdown."
They don't have friends , and many are struggling in the present. They can chat, play and interact on Minecraft without ever physically being there. It's a platform to connect and create a communities.
"Young people live online and the Bible teaches us how to connect with people wherever they are in their communities.
"Jesus broke the boundaries of what people believed was normal worship, and He would be pleased with the idea that the church is moving forward."
Around 20 kids between the ages of 11 and 17, spend two and a half hours on server every Wednesday.
In that time they're free to explore the world or pursue their own interests, but for 30 minutes they are transported to a common area to complete a Bible-themed task.
Mr. Young said they ensured that the adults were able to stop bad language, and control those who joined and had permission from the parents for their children to join.
Rosie 15, who is 15 years old is one of the teenagers who regularly joins. She told us, "I love it because it lets me talk to my friends while playing, it's just as enjoyable as getting together at our regular youth group."
"I thought it was a good idea when Josh transported everyone to the same spot and we held a contest to build the most beautiful boat from Matthew Chapter 8 where Jesus stopped the storm. My team won because we built little lightning storm clouds."
