New Minecraft Skins With Default Minecraft Skins Bring Back Steve's Beard

Mojang has changed the default Minecraft skins to Steve and Alex - and Minecraft Steve's beard is finally back after years of sporting a neat-shaven appearance. The blue-shirted Minecraft Steve was the original model. However, many players mistakenly thought it was a beaming smile. It was later taken off to make the default character more gender-neutral.



In 2014, another default skin was introduced to Minecraft The Minecraft Alex. Mc name Minecraft Alex. Featuring a green top and longer red hair tied in ponytails, Alex offers a slightly more feminine look than Steve's model. Helen Chiang, the Microsoft studio head of Minecraft, stated in a 2018 interview that the company was looking to challenge gender stereotypes and present Alex and Steve with identical physical characteristics and capabilities.



With two options available to players the decision has been taken to bring back Steve's iconic goatee. The new skins were praised in a Minecraft subreddit post. They also improve Alex's shading to give the second character model a more natural, 3D appearance. The response has been mostly positive, with many fans excited to see Steve's original hairstyle back.



Many users have expressed their satisfaction and are happy that Steve now once again matches the style of most official artwork, including his appearance in Nintendo brawler Super Smash Bros Ultimate. "I understand why they originally removed it," says the most upvoted comment in the Reddit thread at the moment of writing, "but it was clearly a big part of Steve's design, and it appears that Mojang is also in agreement. It's wonderful to see it back after all these years.



Jasper Boerstra, Minecraft's lead artist, commented on the new design via Twitter. He wrote, "I'm glad you like the return of the beard!" Boerstra also noted the traditional techniques for banding and 'pillow shading" are employed in the new skins but asked players to weigh on whether this choice was a good one.
