traditionally countriesliked to be self sufficient , but in nineteenth century britain self sufficiency meant living in low standards
the population growth from the late 1980s increased the food demand as the urban centres expanded the demand for food rose resulting in the rise of food prices under pressure from the landed groups the goverment restricted the import of corn the laws allowing the goverment to do this were called as corn laws unhappy with the rising food prices the urban dwellers and industrialists forced the abolition of corn laws

After the corn laws were scrapped the the price imported food materials became cheaper than the food produced within the county british agriculture was unable to compete with imports and large pieces of lands were left uncultivated and thousands of men and women were thrown out of work
As the food prices fell consumption rose in britain from the mid nineteenth century faster industrial growth also meant more income and more imports vast lands were cleared in eastern europe america and canada to meet the demands of britain Only clearing the lands was not enough to fullfill the needs of britain railway lines had to be built which would connect the agricultural lands to the ports and harbours and the harbours had to be repaired and made big to ship the cargos human settlement had to be made for agriculture all these things needed capital and labour capital flowed from financial centres like london and labour were migrated from allaround the world
