'Minecraft Earth' will Shut down On June 30th

A little more than one year after launching Minecraft Earth in the US, Microsoft announced this week it will shut down the game later this year. Minecraft Earth players will have until June 30th , 2021, to play the augmented reality game. It's not available for download on app marketplaces and is not available to download.



Developer Mojang Studios blamed the coronavirus pandemic and the changes to daily life that have come with it for the closure. "Minecraft Earth was designed around free movement and collaborative play and collaboration - two things that have become nearly impossible in the current global situation," the studio said. Minecraft-servers Like Niantic with Pokemon Go, Mojang had altered the game to make it easier to play at home. Clearly, these changes weren't enough.

- Minecraft (@Minecraft), January 5 2021. But there is a silver lining to the news of today: Mojang plans on presenting Minecraft Earth in style. The studio has released one final update for Minecraft Earth. It includes changes that "make your time on Minecraft Earth more fun." The update also stops real-money transactions, and dramatically reduces the time to build and craft items within the game. It also allows players to access all the content Mojang was working on prior to the announcement. "We believe these changes will allow players to explore, create and create more while remaining safe inside," the studio said.



After June 30th comes and expires, Microsoft will delete player data on July 1st. You'll get a token when you spend money on Minecraft Earth during the game's life. This token will enable you to download the Bedrock version of Minecraft to your phone. More details about the closure can be found on the Minecraft website.



It's a disappointing end for Minecraft Earth for Microsoft. When we first saw the game in action at WWDC 2019, it was clear that Microsoft was optimistic about the game. The fact that Minecraft Earth couldn't survive through the outbreak, with all of Microsoft's resources available it's not a good indicator for the future of consumer AR applications.



"We're eternally grateful for the incredible talent in the Minecraft community," Mojang said. "This was not an easy decision. We're doing everything we can to ensure that you get the best out of Minecraft Earth before it goes dark."
