Since the series' debut, its success, and the culmination of The Sopranos, the American gangster film has been the primary source of the medium, has remained stagnant. The size, scope, and unmatched quality and detail of David Chase's seminal HBO series made The Departed which, in the end, got Martin Scorsese an Oscar, appear tinny by comparison. The huge success of Game Of Thrones seems to have done the same to fantasy. GSERVERS I mean, how can we think that Warcraft's 123-minute running time to compare to the 57 episodes and counting that Game Of Thrones has yet aired?
It's a good start. Warcraft might at least have a coherent plot and mythology and both are tossed at the viewers with a gibberish vociferation that barely register. At times, especially in the beginning you're left pondering your mental state as the crowd of characters fighting for screen time quickly discuss events and history that you're almost certain you've never heard of before with the reverence of a priest who is discussing the last supper at church.
Warcraft jitters about like a sluggish teenager who's been studying all day. We first meet Durotan (Toby Kebbell) who is an Orc noble who is also Chieftain his Clan. Since the Orc home world is dying, they traverse through a massive portal that is powered by innocent people to the Stormwind Kingdom, where the evil Gul'dan is determined to murder all humans.
King Llane Wrynn (Dominic Cooper) who is the leader of Stormwind quickly becomes aware of the invasion, and along with his most powerful knight Sir Anduin Lothar (Travis Fimmel), the Guardian of Trisfal, Medivh (Ben Foster), as well as Medivh's apprentice Khadgar (Ben Schnetzer) they decide to quash this uprising, even though the Horde of Orcs outnumber them by a large margin. However they get a helping hand from Garona Halforcen (Paula Patton) an Orc-draenei survivor that believes she is half-human and other members of the Horde that are sceptical about their leader.
I must admit that Warcraft's convoluted and confusing narrative and its many threads took me several hours to comprehend. The film's stunning visuals are instantly apparent, all of which marches through to, surprise, Game Of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi's epic battle chant of a score Warcraft quickly realizes that it has too much plot and not enough time. It's like constantly playing catch-up. Everything is too fast and condensed - sharp viewers will even spot where it has been cut down and you end up feeling lost because it seems to circle around the same points without any real momentum forward.
Warcraft also doesn't aid its cause by adding a complicated nuance to its characters, which only hinders its setup. Each character has their own problems and every one isn't simply a line drawn in the middle. Naturally, this kind of character development is always appreciated, but against the fast-paced turbulence of Warcraft's plot , it means that as a viewer, you never get a sure footing and you're in a state of despair as the story unfolds.
Although Warcraft's large cast, its difficulties and short length make it difficult to comprehend but it quickly becomes a familiar film that pays off. The conclusion actually unveils, intensifies, and brings together the characters' plights in a enthralling, climactic fashion that makes it resonant and gives an enjoyable reward.
Director Duncan Jones takes to his first mega-budget blockbuster ( Source Code only cost $32 million for the production, while Warcraft comes in at a reported $160 million) with the composure and emotion that we've all hoped for. Not only does he have an eye for spectacle that surpasses Zack Snyder and Michael Bay and Michael Bay, but he cleverly incorporates the effects without allowing them to overwhelm or undermine the essence and realism of the film, all the while using an eclectic, gorgeous and arresting color palette that is truly vibrant.
Through his multi-faceted character (he also co-wrote the script), Jones is able to allow his own personality to shine, which is evident in the emotional character development of the characters. Their humanity shines through despite the motion capture used in the production, bringing the Orcs to life. Jones embraces the weird and disturbing at the same time you will be astonished by the effects that showcase the eerie and mysterious loss of life.
Duncan Jones can't solve all Warcraft's problems, though. In fact, he's partly responsible for the breakneck start and poor juggling of characters that are so tedious. His sharp eyes and awe-inspiring ambition make the film worth the cost. So much so that after sifting through the muck of its mythology, I'd even be interested in seeing more from the franchise.
