It can also be used for other blocks. Place a comparator next to a cake. You'll notice that it is emitting a strength of 14 from its front. Take a slice and it will fall down 2. Eat another slice and it will go down two more. You could develop a system that will sound an alarm when someone eats it.
Try putting a comparator next to a composter. It will emit the strength of the signal depending on how full of compost it is. Combine it with a hopper that is above it filled with organic materials and you'll be in a position to fill your composter when it empties.
A jukebox gives an intensity signal that will indicate what music is playing. A signal is generated by a beehive, based on the amount of honey contained within. A lectern will emit a signal depending upon which page the player is reading in the book. An item frame will emit a signal based on the rotation of the item within.
