Hackers have targeted the Danish government's plan to recreate the entire country using the popular computer game Minecraft.

Officials confirmed that large cities -including Copenhagen - had been damaged when users discovered a way to smuggle virtual dynamite, thought to be banned in the Danish region of the Minecraft world.

Parts of the city are being rebuilt by the Danish government.

Danish officials acknowledged that "Several large Danish towns were leveled to the ground and many new things have been built all over the place."

The government was the first to fully integrate a country into the huge Minecraft games. It was hoped that it would make learning more enjoyable for students.

It even created a set of lesson plans for teachers that assist them in navigating the virtual version of their country.

Initial reports suggested that whole cities were destroyed.

The claims were denied however.

"The entire cities aren't completely grounded to the ground. It's only MINOR areas," said Chris Hammekenof the Danish GeoData Agency

'We consider that as a nature of playing Minecraft elements are broken down and new ones are being created.

"We will therefore not relaunch the demo of Denmark in Minecraft.

"But sometimes , we reconstruct minor areas if buildings have been removed and there is no construction going on."

"We have built Denmark online using Minecraft to ensure that children could plant their own forest and create a riding school, lake or biogas plant, windturbine, and so forth," said Kirsten Brosbol (Danish Minister for the Environment) at the time of the launch of the project.

"Pupils believe that it is more fun to work with their own house, street and so on.
