'Minecraft' with a Story isn't as Bizarre as you Think.

A narrative-driven game like Minecraft, the block-building phenomenon adored by children and adults alike, could sound bit contradictory. By design, Minecraft has little in the way of plot or characters. The world is generated randomly and the best "stories" are naturally generated based on what you decide to build and explore. The game's openness is what makes it special and the reason Minecraft: Story Mode, an off-shoot with a carefully crafted plot, has been met with so much skepticism. Minecraft is a game that doesn't have any kind of story. Can it be possible or appropriate for another developer to create one?



Telltale Games is most famous for its adventure games that are adapted of popular franchises such as Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, and Fables. These properties unlike Minecraft are based on established stories, characters and mythology that the team is able collaborate with. Telltale utilizes its own game engine and comic book style to create five episodes. These are broken down into cutscenes, branching conversations, short-term events, and puzzles. It is possible to explore an environment. However, there's very little exploration or creativity. Do you want free-form building and crafting like in Minecraft? Better look elsewhere.



Minecraft: Story Mode works despite these vast differences. It's a delightful celebration of the game that made Markus Persson a billionaire. The characters and narrative feel like they belong in the world, despite not being mentioned in the original game. You take on the role of Jesse in the first episode. In contrast to other Telltale games, you can choose between a boy and a girl and also choose one or more of three races. It's a nice feature that immediately gave me a feeling of belonging to the character. The voice acting was performed by either Patton Oswalt (best-known for his roles in Ratatouille or The King of Queens) and Catherine Taber (you might recognise her voice from Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker or Star Wars: The Clone Wars). With an intimate group of friends you are determined to win a building competition at a Minecon-style gathering called Endercon.



There's no reference to Jesse's treehouse, his or her pet pig Reuben or the Endercon competition in the original Minecraft game. Which could be a problem, however, Telltale quickly impressed me in a few different ways. First, Story Mode doesn't claim to be the ultimate storyline for Minecraft. It's a distinct take on the blocky series and is set in its own, distinct version of the Minecraft world. That gives the writers room to experiment, while also protecting the source material. Story Mode also weaves in numerous elements that will be familiar to players of the original game. Portals, beacons, and creepers all are present in the first episode, and are easy to recognize. When Telltale introduces a novel concept -- like an amulet that is colorful and used to locate important characters It does not feel out of place in the Minecraft universe. Story Mode is respectful to the original game's design by expanding, but never abusing Minecraft's established elements and mechanics.



Although the pace of the game is slow at first but when the Endercon building contest is over the plot is picked up considerably. At the very beginning, Telltale introduces the heroes known as the Order of the Stone, which once defeated the Ender Dragon, but then became a legend. The peril the world now faces is linked to the members of the Order and the developer sets up some of the major mysteries of the five-part series. Although it's not exceptional however, I'm still enthralled enough to continue watching the remaining episodes.



Story Mode is meant to be a family-friendly. There are some limitations to the writing and Telltale's ability to utilize its fun characters. Fables (The Wolf Among Us) and The Walking Dead have provided more opportunities for the team to create dark and unpredictable characters with shady strategies. These trigger stronger reactions in the player, more difficult decisions and more complex relationships with the characters you choose to identify with. Most of Story Mode's cast is likable (aside from Jesse's friend Axel, who tends to be impulsive and self-centered) So I spent most of my time trying to make friends with everyone.



The characters are distinct and possess an enthralling, lively personality. healthhuman It is easier to anticipate the outcome of each dialogue because they all have clear motivations. Previous Telltale games have suffered from occasionally stiff scripts and inconsistency in pacing -- an inevitability of a series with a variety of storylines , but they've always made me feel strongly about the characters. Story Mode is no different, which is a testament of the quality of the script. Although Jesse's friends are somewhat superficial, they are easy to root for. I really want my "Nether Maniacs" (early on the show, you can choose your team's name during the building competition) to endure and stay together, so I'm eager to see how the show is trying to separate them in later episodes.



Even even if you've never played Minecraft before there's plenty to enjoy in the first chapter of Story Mode. It's a charming, if simple tale with interesting characters and memorable sets. In terms of game design, it could not be further away from Minecraft however Telltale has succeeded in making it work. This is due to the high-quality of the script, and the clever use of classic items, monsters, and gameplay mechanics. Story Mode uses Minecraft's entire toolbox to support its storytelling. It's a great game. It could have been a lazy, awkward cash-in game, but instead it's an elegant respectful spinoff that focuses on Minecraft's unique style of creativity.
