Not content with a mere billion, Minecraft starts racking up more sales this week, when it launches as a downloadable game for Xbox One - and perhaps PS4 too. The Xbox One release date is set for Friday September 5 and 360 owners of Mojang's sandbox game will be upgraded at a cost of $5/PS4 - Microsoft says the upgrade is applicable regardless of whether you own a disc or download copy. If not, the full price version is $20/PS16.
Although the PS4 release date isn't yet confirmed the Mojang's Daniel Kaplan tweeted saying that "Sony fans can expect a Minecraft surprise soon...or maybe sooner?" This tease was made after a PlayStation France tweet claimed that the PS4 version would be out today. thewatr.net However, no other Sony channels have confirmed this. As soon as someone digs up a date for a release for the PS4 version we'll let you know.
Update: The PlayStation 4 version of Minecraft seems to have been launched in the EU. There's no word yet on when the game will be available in North America or other territories. [Image: 4J Studios]
It is highly unlikely that the Vita version will be released this week. 4J Studios, the porting team, announced in the last week that it has "more work" to complete before submitting Vita builds to Sony for certification.
The new versions of Minecraft feature worlds up to 36 times bigger than their last-generation originals, along with longer draw distances. PS3 and Xbox 360 owners have the option to import their worlds into the Xbox One and PS4 versions as well.
This announcement comes at the same time that Mojang released Minecraft1.8 on PC. It's the update that's been in development for the longest time at the Swedish studio at 300 days. It's therefore no surprise that it's a bit of a biggie, adding numerous changes you can browse through here. Highlights include new Guardian and Endermite mobs balanced by the introduction of d'awww - rabbits. Oh, and killer bunnies who are less d'awww yet still a bit dawww. [Image: Mojang]
