Sony Ericsson to Showcase over 20 new Games Optimized for Xperia Play

In our Xperia Play review, we were concerned about the inability to find games that are specifically designed for the handheld's buttons. Therefore, it's only fair to mention that a bevy of new titles is on the horizon -- some old, some new, but all optimized for this specific brand of button-mashing. Headline acts include Minecraft (a port that we've seen before) as well as Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard and Battlefield Bad Company 2, both of which have both been accumulating headshots on iOS devices for some time currently. For the full list of titles, read the press release below. However, don't expect any pricing or availability. Those details will be announced at E3 next week, when the Xperia Play will have to stand out against the Sony NGP. We'll have to wait until the right time to play around with force.

London 2nd June 2011 London, June 2, 2011 Sony Ericsson is again teaming up with Gameloft, a leading global publisher of social and digital games, to deliver an exclusive experience exclusively for its most popular gaming smartphone - Xperia(tm) PLAY - with exclusive access to the action-packed spy thriller shooter Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard, adapted from the famous Ubisoft video game franchise. Utilizing the outstanding graphics capabilities of the smartphone and game-changing control pad Xperia(tm) PLAY delivers the high-octane global action game to the Android operating system for the first time. The Android version of the game, which is scheduled to be launched on Friday 3rd June, will be accessible only to Xperia(tm) PLAY customers in Western Europe throughout June and July.



The game is based on the well-known Ubisoft video game franchise, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six is one of the most popular video game brands. It's a highly-charged tactical first-person shooter game based on a fictional international counter-terrorist group known as "Rainbow." The game is more focused on stealth and tactics than firepower alone, weapons (including assault rifles and handguns with high calibers) as well as uniforms and other equipment are chosen to suit the operative's capabilities and purpose.



Robert Styppa is Vice President Western Europe at Sony Ericsson. He said that Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, Shadow Vanguard has a large fan base and interesting gameplay. "The stunning graphics and the unique capabilities of the gamepad provide an unforgettable experience for users."

During June and July 2011 consumers across Western Europe who have an Xperia(tm) Play will be able to download a free copy of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard. During this time , the game will be available for Android only on the Sony Ericsson Xperia(tm) PLAY.



Sony Ericsson also announced 20 new games, 10 of which are exclusive and optimized for Xperia(tm), PLAY. 03no Many of the games will be on display at E3 the world's biggest games fair, from June 7-9.



The latest titles appeal to a wide range of players and occasions, from the most innovative multi-player online games (MMOs) to thrilling titles that are graphically rich casual content.



Amongst the titles that were announced today is Minecraft(tm) which is the highly sought-after game from Swedish indie developer Mojang. Minecraft(tm) is one of the fastest-growing game franchises in the history of gaming with over 8 million registered players to date and over 50k new players joining each day.



Sony Ericsson has confirmed that new games from Sony Computer Entertainment's classic PlayStation 1 titles will soon be available on Xperia(tm).



Sony Ericsson supports the Android ecosystem through partnerships with major industry players like Unity and Havok. This partnership is helping to create an ever-growing ecosystem. Sony Ericsson will launch a program called "Stand Out from the crowd" to help and support innovative game developers. This program allows game developers to be part of the Xperia (tm) PLAY story and gets their games the exposure they need. Sony Ericsson will attend E3 in Los Angeles from June 7-9 to showcase the Xperia(tm) PLAY, other new games at booth 713. The new games that were announced today will be released in the next few months. Details about the timeframe and the exclusivity of the games will be announced during E3 Week and closer to the time of launch.
