According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), Avanos Medical recalls the Cortrak*2 Enteral Access System due to the incorrect placement of nasogastric and nasoenteric tubes has led to injury and death of patients. Avanos Medical The recall affects 629 devices currently distributed in the United States.
Avanos is promoting the Cortrak*2 Ental Access System due to its ability to visualize the stomach and small bowel. This allows for the installation of the medical feed tube. However, patients could suffer damage to their vocal cords or lung if the tube is not correctly inserted. Avanos Medical feeding tube Avanos Medical recalls that there are sixty accidents, 23 deaths, and 23 illnesses related to the incorrect placement or accidental insertion of nasogastric feeding tube while using the CORTRAK*2 Entral Access System. Avanos Medical feeding tube Pneumothorax (collapsed lung), pneumothorax, perforation (a gap or hole within the lung's wall), pneumonia, and Pleural effusion (excess fluid between the chest cavity and the lungs) are some of the incidents.
Avanos Medical has described a plan to provide users with current labeling to verify the proper placement of nasogastric and nasoenteric tubes before use
The Avanos warning is the second warning that the FDA issued in 2022 regarding enteral feeding tubes. In February, parents and healthcare professionals were warned by the FDA about the possibility of strangulation of children with tubes for feeding. Two cases of child strangulation were reported in 2021. Avanos Medical feeding tube The reason for this was tubes that were placed around the neck of one of the patients.
