Avanos Medical is being recalled for the feeding tube system which was linked to 23 deaths between 2015 between 2015 and.

The FDA has issued the most extreme warning for the recall of Avanos Medical's Enteral Feeding Tube Positioning System.

Cortrak*2 Enteral Access System consists of an electromagnetic stylet, an exterior receiver and a display screen. The system provides a live stream of medical tube feeding that are inserted in patients' stomachs or small bowels. This facilitates an improvement in tip placement precision and elimination of any complications.

The safety issue isn't a recall, in the literal sense. Avanos doesn’t ask healthcare providers send the devices back at the manufacturer. Avanos wants them to make use of the devices in a safe manner.

A feeding tube improperly installed can result in damage to vocal cords or the tracheas. Avanos has reported the deaths of 23 people and 60 injuries cases in 2015 according to the FDA. All of this was due to FDA's Cortrak*2 system, which guides placement of feeding tubes.

The FDA issued a march 21 field correction notification in which the Georgia-based company reminded users to confirm the placement of nasogastric tubes and Nasoenteric pipes in accordance with institutional guidelines. Cortrak 2 eternal access system Avanos has also asked users to add the safety notice to the operating manual of the device and verify that they have received the update.

Avanos has stated that it will shortly issue new labels for the device. It will also include the instructions for the location of a tube according to their facility's policies.

The FDA has issued a second warning regarding tube feeding through the stomach. The FDA released an safety communication in February warning parents and healthcare professionals of the danger of strangulation if children are feeding tubes.

After two deaths in 2021 the notification was sent. In each case the tubing system was discovered to have inadvertently wrapped around the neck of patients under the age of two while they weren't being directly monitored by caregivers or hospital workers.
