Avanos Medical, a U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) company recalls Cortrak*2 the enteral access system because of misplacement of nasoenteric tubes or nasogastric tubs that could have caused injuries and even patient deaths. The recall currently comprises 629 devices that were distributed throughout the United States.
Avanos promotes the Cortrak*2 Ental Access System because of its ability to view the stomach of a patient and their small bowel. This allows the placing of a medical feed tube. If the tube is not placed correctly, it can result in damage to vocal cords, lungs and the trachea. The recall notification from Avanos Medical states that as of 2015, there has been 60 deaths and 23 injuries due to the incorrect placement of nasogastric feed tube when using the CORTRAK*2 enteral access system. https://anotepad.com/notes/y6w2jqec The injuries can be described as pneumothorax, respiratory failure, and perforation. Avanos Medical has described a plan to provide users with updated labeling, to confirm the correct placement of nasogastric and nasoenteric tube prior to use.
Avanos is the second warning issued by the FDA has issued regarding intra-oral feeding tubes. Avanos Medical In February the FDA issued a warning to parents and healthcare professionals regarding the risk of strangulation when children are fed via feeding tubes. Two cases of strangulation by a child were reported in 2021. The reason for this was a tubing system placed around the neck of the patient.
