The Minecraft giant shows no signs of slowing down. The developer Mojang today announced that Minecraft has sold 100 million copies across all platforms including PCs, Macs, consoles, and mobile. Around 53,000 copies of the game have been sold every day since the beginning. The game is addicting. More than 40 million players play Minecraft every month to play with a shovel, axe, and sword. Other than Tetris, very few games have even come close to hitting the 100 million mark.
The game's open-ended structure and unlimited potential as well as its the possibility of success are the key elements to its success. Players can build anything they can imagine as long as the outward-facing geometry is made up of simple, vibrant blocks. Many players continue to play the game for years even though they're old. Mojang has been providing regular updates to the game, including new mechanics, creatures, and materials. The game's versatility has made it a huge hit in the classroom, teaching art, geology as well as coding and other subjects.
Many wondered what Microsoft had in mind for Mojang when it acquired the company a couple of years ago. Is there a sequel? A sort of exclusive access to Xbox, Windows Phone and PC? Minecraft's popularity doesn't show any signs of waning. The game's strengths aren't a finite story or tremendous graphics. Because of this it has a timeless appeal that catches young children as they get old enough to play it. As long as that continues, Minecraft will continue to sell at a phenomenal rate.
