Setting: New York City
'Cities Are People Too' is set in New York City and features the Twin Towers bombing as its setting. The setting of this book is important, because it provides an opportunity to make social commentary about the city and its inhabitants. It also provides a backdrop for the protagonist's plotline, which revolves around his father's death in a terrorist attack.
The city is made up of five boroughs, each coextensive with a county in New York State. Each borough contains hundreds of distinct neighborhoods, each with their own unique character and history. If the population of all five boroughs were counted, four of the five would be in the top ten most populous cities in the U.S., while the population of Staten Island would be 37th most populous.
Setting: Vietnam
The setting of a story can be important in determining how the story will unfold. For example, in "The Things They Carried," by Tim O'Brien, the setting of the novel plays a vital role. The setting sets the stage for the main character Jimmy Cross's character development. As he juggles his duties during the Vietnam War, he is faced with a conflicted love life and too many responsibilities.
The climate of Vietnam is very different in different regions. In northern Vietnam, summer typically lasts from April or May until October, and is characterized by hot weather, heavy rainfall, and occasional typhoons. The northeast monsoon winds bring rains to lowland plains and the eastern slopes of the mountains. Temperatures in the southern regions are generally high from December to April.
