British Museum to be Digitally Recreated In Minecraft

British Museum to be digitally recreated in Minecraft By Joe Miller Technology Reporter

23 September 2014

The video game Minecraft will recreate the British Museum in London, complete with all of its exhibits.

This project is part of the Museum of the Future program which aims to boost the appeal of the museum.

Many real-world organizations have created maps using Minecraft which includes Ordnance Survey, the Danish government and Ordnance Survey. They want to make young people aware of their work.

This week, Minecraft was sold to Microsoft for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

A spokesperson for the museum said that the project was still in "an initial planning phase" and that the "build" has not yet started.

She added that the organisation was intending to recruit people from the public to help with the "construction".

Six million people visit the museum every year. The museum holds eight million objects.

The natural history collection was relocated to South Kensington in 1880s, which would later become the Natural History Museum.

Its instantly identifiable Great Court, designed by Lord Foster, is the largest covered public space in Europe

One British Museum employee posted details of the project on the social media site Reddit soliciting volunteers to get involved.

He received an enthusiastic response from Minecraft fans around the globe.

Initial stages

Digitally creating the Great Court, facade and interior of the building is the initial step in the process.

The institution hopes this stage will be in time for a public discussion titled the changing public dialogues of museum collections in the digital age, which will take place on 16 October.

Ed Barton, who researches gaming for the analytics firm Ovum Barton told the BBC the British Museum's move to Minecraft would help it be "perceived as something enjoyable" and could serve as an effective educational tool for a younger demographic.

He said, "It's the digital version of building the British Museum using Lego." "You have to build it brick by brick".

He also said that the company should be praised for crowdsourcing the project "as it transforms it into something that is collaborative" and could further engage young Minecraft fans.

"What a cool project it would be to be asked to build the Elgin Marbles in Minecraft," he said.

Reddit is the best way to express your interest in supporting the British Museum project.
