The capes were previously only available to Minecon attendees, you can now get your very exclusive Minecraft capes. Find out how to obtain them in both Minecraft Java and Bedrock

How can you get hold of Minecraft capes You might ask? There have been rumors of a fabled piece of cloth that graces the shoulders of the top Minecraft players. The legends speak of myriad Minecraft capes handed out to the fortunate few over the years. The word on the block (sigh) is that capes can also alter the appearance of Minecraft Elytra, the magical wings that are found on end ships, as they occupy the same area on a player's back. Needless to say, Minecraft capes are extremely sought-after however, they're not easily obtained.



Each year, a new design and color was offered to people who attended any Minecon event prior to Minecon Earth 2017. More rare are the personal capes given to lucky people in recognition of their accomplishments for example, Reddit user u/billyk_, who was given a personal turtle cape after he suggested that Mojang should include turtles in Minecraft.



Unless you can think of a solution similar to turtles (unlikely) or can time travel back to the past of Minecon, it looks like you're out of luck to get any of these Minecraft capes in the Java version. They're a bit more common in the Bedrock version, as some skin packs on the Marketplace contain them. If you'd like to have them free, you can try on a cape using the help of Minecraft mods, though it'll only be visible to you. There's a currently available Minecraft cape available for the Java version, however you'll need to read this article for more information on how to get it.





Get a Minecraft cape by transferring your account to the Minecraft platform.

Mojang announced in a blog post all Minecraft Java Edition accounts will be moved from Mojang to Microsoft. This is a requirement and if you don't switch your account to Microsoft at the time it is due then you'll never be allowed to play Minecraft unless you use the launcher.



On the bright side, however when you log in to Minecraft using your Microsoft account, you'll be able to unlock a shiny new cape - and maybe more than that, as Mojang promises players more than one outfit to show off'. Mojang does not automatically create new Minecraft accounts.

How do you activate Minecraft capes

If you own an official Minecraft cape, you are able to equip them prior to starting the game. However the capes you have Bedrock caps are exclusive to the version you have. This is also true for any capes that you can earn in Minecraft Java version.



For the Bedrock version start the app and then click the button to enter the Dressing Room from the main menu. Then, click the tab on left, which has an orange cape and Mojang's logo. This will show all your available capes So, pick one and click on equip.



To get the Java version, launch the Launcher and select Minecraft: Java Edition on each tab on the left. There are a variety of options at the top, including Skins. If you select a Skin File, you will see all your officially available capes.

There is a caveat that other players you interact with on multiplayer Minecraft servers will not be able to view your cape unless they also have the same mods installed. Waiting for official Mojang capes to be handed to you when your account migrates is the best way to make sure everyone is able to see your cape.
