Minecraft And NFTs

Recently, we've received feedback from the community inquiring for clarification and more transparency regarding Mojang Studios and Minecraft's position on NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and blockchain.

While we are currently working on updating our Minecraft Usage Guidelines to offer more specific guidelines on the latest technologies, we want to use this opportunity to share our view that integrations of NFTs with Minecraft are generally not something we allow or even support. Let's take a look!

WHAT IS A NFT?
Addict Gaming

An NFT is a unique, non-editable, digital token that is part of a cryptocurrency and typically purchased using cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. An NFT can be associated to any digital asset, such as an MPEG and a GIF. However, digital art like JPEGs are the most well-known application for an NFT. An NFT is the token that indicates the owner of the original digital file. Yet, with any digital file, it can be copied, moved, or even deleted. Blockchain and NFTs have been linked to speculation. This is where prices can be soaring quickly and, as we have seen, may fall quickly.

What are the implications for me?

If you're a participant or creator actively involved in buying, selling, or trading of NFTs which make use of Minecraft (like skins or worlds) We strongly recommend you go through the information below. If not, these changes won't affect you.

OUR POLICY ON MINECRAFT NFTS

In our Minecraft Usage Guidelines, we explain how a server's owner can charge users for access, and how all players should have access to the same functionality. These rules are in place to ensure Minecraft remains an open community that gives everyone access to the same content. NFTs are able to create models of scarcity and exclusion that are in conflict with our Guidelines and the spirit of Minecraft.

Blockchain technologies are not allowed to be integrated into our client or server apps. Neither may Minecraft game-related content such as skins, worlds and other items be utilized by blockchain technology to create a precious digital asset. These are our reasons.

Certain companies have recently launched NFT implementations that are associated with Minecraft world files and skin packs. Other examples of how NFTs and blockchain can be utilized in conjunction with Minecraft include creating Minecraft collectible NFTs that allow players to earn NFTs through activities performed on a server, or earning Minecraft NFT rewards for activities that are not part of the game.

Each of these uses of NFTs and other blockchain technologies result in digital ownership built on scarcity and exclusion which is not in line with Minecraft values of inclusion and creativity and playing with others. NFTs are not inclusive of all of our community and create a scenario of the haves and have-nots. The speculation about prices and the investment mindset associated with NFTs takes the focus away from playing the game and encourages profiteering, which is incompatible with the long-term happiness and success of our players.

We are also concerned that some third-party NFTs may not be reliable and may cost players who purchase them. Third-party NFT implementations may also depend on blockchain technology. They could require an asset manager who could disappear without notice. NFTs were sold at inflated or artificially high prices in certain instances. We are aware of the value of creation within our game and aim to create a market in which these values are acknowledged.

To ensure that Minecraft players have a safe, inclusive experience, blockchain technology is not allowed to be integrated into our Minecraft client or server applications. They also cannot be used to create NFTs from any in-game content including skins and worlds, personal items, or other mods. We will also be paying close attention to how blockchain technology develops in the future to ensure that the above principles are not violated and determine if it will allow for more secure experiences or other practical and inclusive applications in gaming. We don't plan to incorporate blockchain technology into Minecraft at this time.

We'll be sharing more information with you in the near future. We have our guidelines here, but in the meantime, we hope to have more information to share with you. Keep an eye out!
